Prayer/Quiet Rooms

What do we do if some of our Muslim employees want a prayer room specifically for Muslims? They also want separate rooms for men and women, and are concerned about cleaners from a different faith entering the room.

What the employer did:
In this case there was not enough space for the employer to offer another room, so the organisation has enabled individuals to arrange their working time (subject to meeting the core requirements of the business) to enable them to go and visit a nearby mosque.

EFB Comment:

There was no requirement to provide separate facilities and in this case the employer went above and beyond what would be required by law.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We have two prayer/quiet rooms and have been approached by Muslim and Christian groups wishing to dedicate one room to their individual faith, making any necessary alterations to the physical profile of the room. How should we respond?

What the employer did:
The employer did not allocate separate rooms to the two groups on the basis that other organisations in similar circumstances have retained prayer rooms for use by all faith groups.

EFB Comment:

If necessary the employer could explain that rooms can't be allocated to individual religious groups because they are available to all employees, and on the basis of the employers' need to manage space & cost effectively.
